Taupo District Council Redundancies

Taupo Chamber of Commerce and Industry - Press Release 03 March 2011

Taupo District Council is currently working through a restructuring programme in an attempt to reduce its fixed costs and to streamline the organisation to reflect the current economic conditions. The Taupo Chamber of Commerce is concerned about the potential impact of the restructure on the Taupo community and has met with the CEO of Taupo District Council, Rob Williams in an attempt to help mitigate the overall economic and social impact of the restructure on the local community.

At this stage it is understood that between 40 and 50 people will be made redundant as a result of the restructure. The exact structure and therefore number of redundancies will be confirmed towards the end of March. “Given the current economic climate, there is a real risk that many of these people and their families will have no choice but to leave the area”, said Rob Marshall, President of the Taupo Chamber of Commerce. “The social and economic impact of this could be significant”, he said. “We are aware that Enterprise Lake Taupo and the District Council are focused on economic growth and creating sustainable employment opportunities, but this will take some time to materialize”.

In an attempt to try and keep as many of those people being made redundant in town, The Chamber, in association with Council has established a free situations vacant service located on Councils intranet. If businesses have a vacancy they can email the advert to general@taupo.govt.nz. Council will then place it onto the ‘District jobs’ page of their intranet for all Council staff to view. “Although only a small thing, if it helps to keep a few families in town, it will have been worthwhile” Rob said. The Chamber is encouraging all Taupo businesses to continue to use their existing recruitment vehicles, such as local recruitment company, Knack and the traditional job ads, but is also urging them to use this service.

New Council Line Up

Six weeks on from the 2010 Triennial Elections, the new line-up of Councillors have had their first couple of meetings and are settling into their new roles. The Taupo Chamber of Commerce is excited with the prospect of change going forward under the direction of the new ward, and is pleased to see a balance of skills and variety in council.

Having a solid amount of business owners representing the Taupo-Kaingaroa Ward will provide the Taupo Chamber of Commerce with a good link on advocacy matters and bring focused representation to the business community.

It is pleasing to see that there was an increase in voters from the previous election with a voter return of 54.21% - 12,629 voting papers returned.
